Still looking for Quotes!

Our "Quote it" wall is taking shape! Add yours too!

“But the best way to measure how much you’ve grown isn’t by inches or the number of laps you can now run around the track, or even your grade point average – though those things are important, to be sure. It’s what you’ve done with your time, how you’ve chosen to spend your days, and whom you’ve touched this year. That, to me, is the greatest measure of success.”

Sign the pledge!

The Random House Tumblr has started a CHOOSE KIND Pledge. They are really close to the goal of 20,000! We hope all of our 3rd-5th graders & staff members will sign! :)

"Just one act of kindness can make a difference. Join the national movement and pledge to choose kind!"

Check out the book trailer for WONDER!

Today, we shared the book trailer for WONDER with all of our students after the morning announcements.

Happy Birthday, Auggie Pullman!

Today, October 10th, is the birthday of August (Auggie) Pullman. Auggie is the main character of the book WONDER. We celebrated his birthday by adding his name to our  daily morning PowerPoint and broadcast announcements, which feature all of our students birthdays for any given day.

Today is also the official kick off day for DFT's WONDER Read-it-Forward program. Over 60 WONDER books have been distributed to staff and students. Everyone is encouraged to read, sign their name, and "Read-it-Forward" by passing the book on to a friend or staff member in the DFT community. It is our goal to have every 3rd, 4th, 5th grader and staff member read this book by the end of the school year.

You can check out the blog for Author, R.J. Palacio here where she talks about Auggie's birthday and how amazed she is that her book is becoming a movement. Also, stop by the Random House Tumblr to see how other schools are being inspired to #choosekind.

Round Rock ISD - One Book, One Community

'Wonder' Book Study Promotes Good Character Traits

Round Rock ISD is promoting kindness through the launch of a community wide “One Book, One District” reading initiative for the 2013-14 school year.

Librarians distributed copies of the book “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio last week to students and interested community members.

The book follows the story of August (Auggie) Pullman who was born with a facial deformity. He originally was homeschooled but his mother decides he needs to attend school with other children. Auggie then faces the challenge of going to school with students who may not be able to get past his appearance.

The book study will cost approximately $40,000. This funding comes from the $100,000 RRISD received in May as the H-E-B Excellence in Education Large District winner.

Deputy Superintendent of Administration and Instruction Dr. Martha Salazar-Zamora said after people finish reading the book they should pass it on to someone else. They are also encouraged to write notes in the books and share favorite passages.

“We wanted to invest the dollars to really connect with all of our schools and the community and place a significant focus on literacy, reading and writing,” Salazar-Zamora said. “This book touches on subjects like bullying and the importance of kindness to others. It’s rare to have reading material that appeals to elementary, middle and high school students and this does. Whether you are in food service or in the classroom you can relate to this book.”

Palacio is tentatively scheduled to visit RRISD in 2014.
